The Spelman Alumnae Association was organized in May 1892, with Clara Howard, Class of 1887, as President. With great foresight, Miss Howard envisioned the growth and development of Spelman College. With futuristic projections of the college attracting students nationwide, the organization was called the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College from its beginning in 1892.

Claudia White Harreld, Class of 1901, was elected President in 1902. She was the first Secretary of the Alumnae Office and published the first Alumnae Directory. At the 1925 meeting, the alumnae discussed plans for giving the College some memorial to Miss Grover and Miss Werden (associates of the two founders, and instructors). The suggestion made by Mrs. Gertrude Fisher Anderson, that the memorial be a fountain, was adopted. A spot on the campus between Packard and Morehouse Halls was selected as the site. The Grover-Werden Memorial Fountain was dedicated on May 31, 1927 with Miss Harreld presiding.

THE NATIONAL ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION OF SPELMAN COLLEGE PRAYER
by Virginia Turner Dowell, Class of 1947

Almighty God, maker of all humankind,
Bless those that are gathered here in unity of purpose.
Instill within our hearts love and respect for each other.
Open our minds to new ideas;
Give us patient wisdom and foresight to plan,
And carry out those plans.
Give us calm strength to build for the future,
To lead, to teach, to create, to select, to govern, to direct,
And in doing so, engender true sisterhood.
Help us to enkindle that which is just, true and good
For our Alma Mater, Spelman College.
We ask this in the name of one God,
Now and forever.

Amen
